Markers

Markers let you flag specific points in time — edit decisions, sync points, notes, or anything else worth marking. They appear on the time ruler and snap to other clips and the playhead, and are synced to their corresponding AE layers.

The toolbar includes a dedicated Marker button. Clicking it adds a marker at the current playhead position. Whether it creates a composition marker or a layer marker depends on your selection:

  • No clip selected — adds a composition marker to the timeline
  • Clip selected — adds a layer marker to that clip

Press M to do the same thing as clicking the Marker button. Works during playback for on-the-fly marking.

Right-click a clip and select Add Marker to place a marker on that specific layer at the current playhead time.

Double-click a marker to open the marker dialog. From here you can:

  • Time — set the marker’s time value
  • Duration — set a duration for the marker
  • Comment — give the marker a label. The comment appears with the marker.
  • Color — choose a color for the marker (matches AE’s marker color options)

Drag a marker left or right on the ruler to reposition it. Markers snap to clip edges and the playhead.

To extend a marker’s duration, Alt+drag the right edge of the marker. This turns a point marker into a duration marker (or extends an existing duration marker). The left edge stays fixed while you drag the right edge to set the endpoint.

Right-click a marker and select Delete Marker.

With snap enabled (Shift+S), clips and the playhead snap to marker positions during drag, just like they snap to clip edges. This makes it easy to align clips to a specific marked time.
